Our friends from the Belgian Luxembourg Chamber of Commerce would like to invite all interested VCL members to the following event:

BLCC Member Glovers Solicitors and the BLCC would like to invite you to their joint seminar - “Introduction to English Leases” 6.30pm on 11th October 2016 at the Luxembourg Embassy, 27 Wilton Crescent, London, SWIX 8SD.

The seminar will be hosted by Philip Mundy, a property partner and solicitor at Glovers Solicitors. Philip is fluent in French, German and Luxembourgish and specialises in advising international businesses and investors in connection with their property requirements in England and Wales.

Philip will guide us through the most common tenant pitfalls during the life of a typical commercial lease and will give useful and practical tips on how to avoid painful and costly tenant mistakes. Philip will round off his talk with a brief introduction to renting a residential property in England and Wales.

The seminar is aimed at business managers and individual who lease property in England and Wales but who are not familiar with English landlord and tenant law.

"Connecting the Dots" - A Session on Leadership with Patrick De Smedt

As a pioneer of Microsoft in Europe Mr. De Smedt has had an extremely successful career as a top-executive, investor and non-executive director of several public and private companies. This has made him an all-rounder in the European software and technology space. Mr. De Smedt received a Business Engineering degree from Katholieke Universiteit Leuven where he is Honorary Fellow and a distinguished member of Ekonomika Alumni.

In a TED-style talk Patrick will share principles of effective leadership drawing on his broad experiences in growing organisations successfully in Europe.

First theater production of Flemish actress Elle Van Knoll

Elle van Knoll is a Flemish actress who recently graduated in theater studies in London.

She is now laying the last hand on her first production, "We just keep going", a play she wrote herself and in which she plays the lead role.

The story starts as a typical relationship between a teenager and her mother but quickly turns into more than meets the eye, as the past and the men in their lives keep finding a way to come between them. As we see daughter Ruby growing into a young adult, she and her mother Susan try to forge their fragile relationship. The result is a hysterically funny and heartbreaking story about family, unconditional love and facing the unfaceable.

"We just keep going" which will be played in Islington's Hen&Chickens Theatre Bar from 1 to 19 September 2015. Tickets can be bought here.

European Championship Hockey

As many of you know, Belgian artists regularly come to some of London's leading art institutions. In the coming weeks however, we are facing a small invasion of top-tier artists crossing the channel and we would like to highlight the following events:

On December 17th the Belgian band Geppetto & the Whales will play a show at Hoxton Bar in London.

Putting the band in a specific corner/genre is pretty difficult, maybe some Midlake - The Doors - Strand Of Oaks - Fleet Foxes - My Morning Jacket - Ravi Shankar - The War On Drugs …

It’s Psychedelic, it’s Americana, a bit Folky and now and then Poppy …

The band sounds mature and young at the same time, it blends beautiful little melodies with overwhelming soundscapes.

They don’t follow the basic-rules of songwriting and they’re the masters in singing in harmonies.

The average age of the band is 22, but the band doesn’t sound like that, old souls in a young body?

WW1 commemoration: Belgian refugees in Rhyl

The beautiful Welsh seaside town of Rhyl was one of the places were Belgian refugees in Britain stayed during the first World War. In light of the WW1 commemorations, the town has now done a research project about these refugees and has asked us to share the result with our members, so please have a look at their website.

Of course, you can also go and have a look at Rhyl itself and you will find more information about the area on facebook, on the local tourist information website or on the regional equivalent.

A cultural evening in London (Dutch and Flemish performers)

The University of Sheffield are organising a cultural evening with performances from Dutch and Flemish artists. They have invited a cabaret duo, De Gebroeders Fretz, and the wonderful Flemish poet and finalist of the Leids Cabaretfestival, Maud Vanhauwaert to perform and participate in a short Q & A and some mingling too! The performances will be in Dutch and English.

This event will take place at the London Dutch Centre on 8th May (7-9pm).

Natalie Helsen, journaliste bij De Morgen Magazine, is op zoek naar mensen uit Londen voor de wekelijkse rubriek: "Mijn Weekend". Hierin wordt telkens een Belg aan het woord gelaten over hoe hij/zij haar weekend in het buitenland beleeft. Hoe kwamen ze er terecht? Hoe voelt de stad voor hen aan? Persoonlijke tips en zo verder.

Gezocht profiel? Het mogen mensen van alle leeftijden zijn, vooral hun verhaal primeert: men zoekt naar vlotte, spontane mensen, die graag leuke dingen in de stad doen tijdens de weekends en die dat graag zouden delen.

Praktisch houdt het in dat geïnteresseerden in contact worden gebracht met de fotograaf die dan met hen enkele foto's gaat nemen op plaatsen waar ze in het weekend graag heen gaan. Later wordt dan contact opgenomen voor een interview.

Belgian band Portrait [B] launches EP in London

Bruckner Symphonies: Paths to Revelation

This April, journey to the sublime and experience the epic force of Bruckner’s most powerful and spiritually uplifting symphonies as The Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra Amsterdam led by the masterful Mariss Jansons return for its second International Associate Residency. Joined by virtuosic soloists Frank Peter Zimmermann, Truls Mørk and Lars Vogt, the orchestra perform three of Bruckner’s greatest and most evocative symphonies together with concertos by Haydn, Mozart and Beethoven.

1. On the 19^th March, a conference by Bill Alder on the life and writings of Georges Simenon (in partnership with the European Commission), will be followed by a drink reception with Belgian beers

2. On the 18^th March, a Stand-Up Comedy with 3 Belgian comedians (event in French).
